Off to Sicily: taking the overnight ferry from Naples to Palermo

Last updated: May 2022

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, had always been a destination I dreamt of visiting. Finally, in 2017, I had the opportunity to set foot on the enchanting island for the first time. The unique architecture, rich history, beaches, and local cuisine left an unforgettable impression and ignited a strong desire to uncover more. And that's precisely what I did. Attracted by the island's irresistible charm, I've returned multiple times since my initial visit.

Ferry to Sicily

You can reach the island using several options: by air, by taking a train (shunted on a ferry), or by choosing the overnight ferry from Naples to Palermo. Personally, I have a preference for the latter. Wondering why? Well, the nightly ferry to Palermo departs around 20:15 and arrives at its destination around 6:30 the following day. This allows you to enjoy a full day of sightseeing in both Naples and Palermo!

There are two ferry operators on this route: Tirrenia and GNV. Having traveled with both, I have a strong preference for the Tirrenia ferries. While their tickets come at a slightly higher cost, they provide a significantly more comfortable journey. The crossings have always been trouble-free, and I've never had any issues getting a good night's sleep on board the ship.

In contrast, the GNV ferries are older and exhibit more signs of wear and tear. I have traveled with GNV twice, and both times, the ferry's stabilizers appeared to be malfunctioning. Walking in a straight line on board the ship became nearly impossible, and several passengers experienced seasickness. Now, I'm not trying to bash GNV; I'm simply sharing my personal experiences on this specific route.

Getting a ticket for the ferry is easy, and you can also do it online. When making your reservation, you can choose between a pullman seat or pay a little extra for a cabin. To make the most of my first day in Palermo, I prefer the comfort of a bed and a morning shower. I therefore always opt for a cabin.

All the cars and trucks to disembark first after the ferry docks at the port of Naples.

The boarding process for the ferry is also quite straightforward. When the ferry docks at the port, it takes a while for all the cars and trucks to disembark. After that, all vehicles bound for Palermo board the ship. Following this, passengers traveling on foot can proceed with the check-in process.

Port of Palermo

Arriving at the Port of Palermo in the morning.

After the ferry leaves the port, make sure to head to the upper deck. From there, you'll enjoy a magnificent view of the Bay of Naples.

Once back inside, there are various ways to keep yourself entertained. On board the ship, you'll find a restaurant, a small arcade hall, and even a cinema!

For those who don't mind rising early, I suggest heading to the upper deck in the morning as well. While enjoying the sunrise, Sicily slowly comes into view, creating a beautiful and serene scene.
